PARENT Letter: August 2024

Dear Parents,
“Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,
make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all
understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)
A mixture of emotions can be seen on the faces of parents as they drop their children off
for the first day of school – joy, excitement, pride, nervousness, and relief (to name a
few). Whatever the emotion might be, do not worry. Be assured the faculty and staff at
St. Philip Preparatory school are dedicated to guiding your children spiritually and
academically.
Looking forward to a great year,
Ms. Danielle Gonzalez

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

NEW Faculty
● Mrs. Judy Banyai is transitioning from Middle School Science Teacher to Art and
PE Teacher.
● We welcome Mrs. Patricia Blevis to the St. Philip Prep family as the new Middle
School Science Teacher and 8B Homeroom Teacher. Mrs. Blevis has a BA from
Thomas Edison College and a Masters in Educational Administration and
Supervision from St. Peter’s College. She comes to us with over 14 years of
various science teaching experiences in both high school and elementary school.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM
Perfect Time Music, LLC, has been invited back for another year of instrumental
instruction. The company offers instrumental music lessons, at a separate cost,
to students in Grades 1-8. Students who register will have a lesson once a week
during school hours on a rotating schedule. This way a student does not miss
the same class each week. Music lessons are 30 minutes long and the instructor
will pick them up from the classroom. Academics always come first! Students
will be responsible for all work missed. If a test is scheduled for the period, then
students will not be pulled at that time.
The staff of Perfect Time Music will be present at the Back to School Nights.
Please arrive early to ask questions should you be interested in signing
your child up for lessons. A flyer with prices and more information will be
available.
FACILITY and SECURITY UPDATES
● The faculty bathroom in the middle school wing has been updated.
● The roofing company and electrician are called in each summer to address and
repair any problems and issues.
● Floors – all floors in the classrooms, hallway, auditorium, and gym have been
stripped and rewaxed.
● SECURITY
○ New door installation is complete (glass gym doors, lobby auditorium
doors, early childhood wing doors, copy room door, nurse’s door, foyer
door that leads downstairs)
○ New/Additional key swipe pads have been installed at the gym’s doors,
Russo Room doors, and all interior lobby doors (creating a mantrap area).

PreK UNIFORMS
Remember uniforms (St. Philip Prep PE uniform) are now mandatory for PreK3
and PreK4 this school year (2024-2025). You can visit Flynn O’Hara’s website
Parsippany, NJ, to purchase the uniform.

MORNING and AFTERCARE
week of school. The cost is $11 per hour ($5.50 per half-hour).
Morning Care starts at 7:00 AM. Any student arriving before 7:30 AM will be
charged $5.50 for the use of Morning Care.
* Students should enter through the main lobby doors.

MORNING ARRIVAL
* Entrance through the auditorium doors will be available once 8th-grade
carline monitors are on duty (7:45 AM). Any student arriving at school
before the 8th graders are on duty (before 7:45 AM) should enter through
the main lobby.
REDIKER/Parent Portal
The Parent Portal via the Rediker system will open on Wednesday, August 28.
Once the Portal is open you will be able to view the monthly calendar and
student homeroom and class assignments. Unless there is a major
discrepancy or conflict, changes to homerooms and classes will not be
made – please do not contact the main office. However, mistakes are
possible. We ask for your patience as corrections are made and adjusted in the
system during the first few days of school.
NEW FAMILIES
Rediker is an online system used throughout the schools in the Diocese of
Paterson. The School Calendar can be viewed when logged into Rediker. The
system also helps parents track the academic progress of their child in addition
to keeping parents and guardians aware of emergency situations at school.
Report Cards will be distributed via the Rediker Parent Portal system as follows:
● Grades 2-8: Four times a year
● Grade 1: Three times a year (Grade 1 does not receive a report card at
the end of the first quarter.)
● PreK3, PreK4, and Kindergarten: Twice a year (January and June)
You may print and save your child’s report card or save it on your computer.
An invitation email will be sent when the portal is officially open for the 2024-2025
academic year (usually a week before school starts). Should you need
assistance, kindly call Mrs. Debbie Neglia at the school and she will be happy to
assist you. Please call 973-779-4700 x. 2.

June 10, 2024

Dear Parents and Guardians,

On Saturday, June 8th, the Church celebrated the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mary’s love and dedication for her son and Lord were so great, she stood under the cross knowing, like Jesus, this must be. She accepted the will of God so that all may be saved. So that all may have life and have it to the full!

Let us offer a prayer of thanksgiving for our heavenly mother and her immaculate heart. During any trial and tribulation, let us turn to her for comfort and guidance. She understands our sorrow and pain. She is a model of great faith, reminding us to keep moving forward and to look for the resurrection in our lives.

Honoring her joyful heart,

June 3, 2024

Dear Parents and Guardians,

“While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, gave it to them and said, ‘Take it; this is my body.” (Mark 14:22)

Have you ever been a little late for a meal and noticed your body gives you signs it’s time to start eating – a grumbling tummy, a headache, or maybe even your body starts shaking? The body will do the same if we go too long without Jesus in our life or without receiving Him, the Eucharist, as Mass. The signs are different, but they are there – the feeling of despair creeps in, the sense that something is missing, or a lack of peace and an increase of worry in the mind.

Pay attention to the signs. Is it time to eat? Be sure to feed yourself in body and soul.

Calling on the name of the Lord,

REMINDERS:

VOTER VOICE – Second Request.

PLEASE PARTICIPATE! It takes less than 5 minutes!

Your support (faculty, staff and parents) is needed for the 2025 NJ State Budget as proposed by Governor Murphy to raise the per pupil amount in the current proposed budget. We can do that by contacting members of the NJ Legislature on the two key issues of Nursing Services and Transportation. Current funding does not cover a full-time nurse at St. Philip Preparatory school.

VoterVoice is the easiest and most efficient method. Here is the link to VoterVoice:

https://www.votervoice.net/NJCC/Campaigns/112988/Respond.

If you are unfamiliar with using VoterVoice just click on the above link, enter the information, add your personal comments if you choose, and then hit send. It’s that easy!

DearParents and Guardians,

“When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together…Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire…and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.”

(Acts 2: 1-4)

Reflection for Pentecost Sunday written by Anne Burleigh:

Every year, the tongues of Pentecostal fire: restoration, the reordering of language so that the recipients can understand the universal truth of God’s word – that is, Jesus Christ. When our language reflects the Word, the eyes of our mind refocus with new clarity. Our reason catches fire, and we become bold. Pentecost means nothing less than reordering our minds to Truth.

Praying with you, “Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth”,

May 13, 2024

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This past Saturday, young boys and girls of St. Philip the Apostle Parish and School made their First Holy Communion. During the two Masses, both Fr. Monteleone and Fr. Nico offered thoughts for the children and parents. Fr. Monteleone compared the Eucharistic Meal to a family dinner in which one is surrounded by loved ones and feels loved. Fr. Nico pointed out this would be the most important day in one’s life and recalled some memories of his First Communion. Both reflections catapulted me back to my childhood. I can vividly remember sitting at the dinner table with my parents and two brothers. I also thought about my First Communion and how my mother put tight spiral curls in my hair and my Communion dress was handmade by a neighbor a few houses down. The memories brought with them a feeling of comfort and of being loved. You may have similar memories and feelings.

Although adult worries and concerns are real and can be imminent at times, there is a special time during the week when we can release those fears and concerns. It is when we go to Mass. During the Eucharistic Celebration there is a powerful grace present. It may not always be physically felt or understood, but it is there. And during this hour out of the week we can relax our shoulders a bit, breathe a little deeper, and allow ourselves to be comforted. It is a time we remember God is our Father and Mother. It is a time to be engulfed by the grace and presence of the Lord.

Allow this grace to seep into your heart and mind. Now, as adult men and women of the church, we are called to bring this sense of comfort and love to the children in our lives.

God’s love is brought to perfection in us,

NWEA

MAP Growth scores help teachers check student performance by measuring achievement and growth.

MAP Growth tests are unique and adapt to your child’s responses to measure your child’s knowledge. If your child answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. These results will provide a more complete picture of where your child is on their learning journey— regardless of whether they are on, above, or below their grade level.

Since MAP Growth tests provide immediate and accurate information about your child’s learning, it’s easy for teachers to identify students with similar scores in similar skills and topics and then plan instruction accordingly.

We are truly excited to focus on your child’s individual growth and achievement.
Dear Parents and Guardians,

“Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God…” (1 John 4:7)

From writings of Pope Benedict XVI:

Inner agreement with God belongs to the happy life. Only if this fundamental relationship is right can all the other relationships be right. For that reason it is important throughout one’s life and from one’s youth onwards to learn and to practice thinking with God, feeling with God, willing with God, so that love may grow from this and become the keynote of our life.

Break into song and sing praise,

April 29, 2024

Dear Faculty and Staff,

“Remain in me as I remain in you.” (John 15:4)

In Sunday’s Gospel, the word “remain” is used eight times, and the phrase, “remain in me” is used four times. When Googling the definition of “remain”, one will find, “continue to exist, especially after other similar or related people or things have ceased to exist.”

Being a disciple of Jesus means to keep the Church alive by allowing Jesus to remain in our hearts, in our minds, in our words, and in our actions. But, as the Gospel states, this is a two way relationship, “Remain in me as I remain in you.” So, we too, will always exist through Jesus who unites us forever with God.

It does not take any effort to live in this relationship, only love. For the second reading of the day from the First Letter of John proclaimed, “Love one another…Those who keep his commandments remain in Him, and He in us, and we will know that He remains in us is from the Spirit he gave us.” (1 John 3:23-24)

United with you bearing much fruit,

Ms. Danielle Gonzalez

April 22, 2024

Dear Parents and Guardians,

“Jesus said, ‘I am the Good Shepherd.’ ” (John 10:11)

Sheep do tend to wander without direction. And many sheep are known to stubbornly resist the shepherd’s nudge with the rod to bring it back to the fold. It would be in these instances a shepherd would use the staff to firmly, yet gently, pull the sheep back.

What kind of sheep have I been lately? One who listens and follows the Good Shepherd’s voice or a stubborn sheep? We have probably been both at one time or another. When I am stubborn, do I feel Jesus firmly, yet gently, pulling me to attend weekly Mass, spend more time in prayer, or be more attentive and compassionate to my family members or friends? Whatever the reason, it is important to pay attention to the nudging of the Lord. Let go and let God lead, guide and care for you.

Praying for grace to let go of the stubborn moments and listen to the voice of the Good Shepherd,

Ms. Danielle Gonzalez

April 15, 2024

Dear Parents and Guardians,

“The two disciples recounted what had taken place on the way. Jesus said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’ Then he said, ‘Why are you troubled?’ Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.” (Luke 24:35-45)

Reflection is taken from The Word Among Us:

Jesus helped the disciples to make sense of all they had been through. He helped them see his death was not a tragedy but a triumph. It was not the end of their hopes, but the beginning of a glorious new future.

Security Updates

I am pleased to share some exciting developments regarding the enhancement of our school’s security measures. Thanks to our concerted efforts and dedication to safety, I’m delighted to announce three significant initiatives have been or are being implemented.

Firstly, we are expanding our radio coverage on campus with state-of-the-art radios. These devices have already proven invaluable in facilitating swift and effective communication during drills and simulations.

Secondly, the foyer isolation measures are progressing forward. The doors have been installed on the Early Childhood wing. We are continuing the effort to strengthen access points and enhanced visitor screening protocols.

Lastly, as per the new statewide school security requirements, the critical incident mapping (CIM) complete with detailed maps outlining emergency exits, evacuation routes, and key locations within the school have been developed and distributed to first responders. This comprehensive mapping system not only aids in navigation during emergencies but also enables more efficient response and evacuation procedures.
